Questions a shell user actually asks.

What SSH client should I use?
OpenSSH if you already have a terminal. On Windows, PuTTY still works; Windows Terminal + OpenSSH is less 2004. We are not going to bless a GUI.
ssh user@kire.net is the motion. Keys preferred. Passwords still exist because humans still exist.
How do I start Eggdrop the first time?
Unpack or compile it in your home directory. Copy the example config. Set nick, server, listen, and the IP/vhost you were assigned. Run it in the foreground once, confirm it on the partyline, then leave it in
screen or tmux. If you wanted none of that, that is the managed offering at eggdrops.net.
What is ident, and do I need it?
identd answers “who is this user?” when an IRC server asks. A lot of nets still care. If ident is closed or lying, you get
~ in front of the username, extra interrogation, or a refusal. We expect ident to work. Do not disable it to be clever.
Why isn’t my vhost showing yet?
PTR is DNS. DNS is cached in places you do not control. New assignments can take a bit to show up in
/whois. Reconnect after it resolves; most clients and bots cache the hop they already have. From the shell, type vhosts to see what is actually assigned. Live list: vhosts.kire.net.
Do you take backups?
We keep geo-redundant copies of the boxes. That is for when a disk dies, not for when you
rm -rf your userfile. Treat our backups as a safety net, not version control. Keep your own copy of configs and scripts. You already knew that.
What is allowed on a shell?
IRC-related daemons, shells, mail, small personal services, the usual Unix tools. An IRC server belongs on Heavy. Not: miners, scanners, open proxies for the world, spam, or anything that makes the uplink a weapon. If you have to ask whether a mass-crawler counts, it counts. Full text: AUP / TOS.
Can I run a bouncer and a bot on the same shell?
Yes, that is a normal setup. Watch the process limits on your plan. A bot, a bouncer, and a couple of screens is why the middle plan exists. An IRC server (Unreal, services, the whole net) is Heavy only.
IPv4 or IPv6 for IRC?
Whichever the target network accepts cleanly. Some nets are still allergic to v6. Some vhosts are funnier in v6. We hand out both; we do not pick your religion. If a server bans your family, try the other one before opening a ticket titled “IRC is broken.”
How do I change my password / pay an invoice?
Client area: /account/clientarea.php. Billing lives there. New orders: /account/cart.php. Sales or technical support: +1 (877) KIRE-NET. This site does not collect cards. If you cannot log in, password reset is in the client area, not a tweet.
